holding on and letting go

we can say our goodbyes with smiles and promises of keeping in touch

but we are both old enough to realize that those are hollow words

sometimes when you part ways, it’s knowing that the chances of reunion

are remote if not completely improbable, even as we speak them aloud

it’s a lie we tell ourselves, when letting go on purpose, is just too hard

it let’s us get the physical distance between us before the emotional need

would compel us to cling to each other and stay in the moment forever
